My Perfect Valentine’s

During the week, my alarm goes off at 5.45 a.m. and that starts the dash to get the children and myself out the house by 7. So come Saturday I like to turn the alarm off and wake up when my body’s ready. I was peacefully dozing this morning – must have been lightly -when I woke to the sound of the front door opening at about 6.45. Yes – there was that moment of panic but then I remembered it was Valentine’s Day and that my 13-year-old son was planning a surprise, so I went back to sleep.

Next time I woke up, my son was beside my bed carrying a breakfast tray! Wow! Did I feel spoiled – tea, homemade croissants, a Cadbury’s chocolate bar – my favorite chocolate and a magazine for me to read.

All this meant:

  • he’d gone to the store to buy the croissant roll dough and chocolate
  • he’d used his allowance to pay for the rolls and candy
  • he’d baked the rolls
  • he’d gotten his Dad to drive him over
  • he’d made me tea

He also told me that he had actually set my alarm for 7 a.m. so I would be awake! (I’m making a mental note to change it otherwise Monday could be disastrous.)

Guess he really took to heart the discussion we’d had after Christmas about taking more responsibility for celebrating holidays. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect Valentine’s gift from him.

V-day kind of passed me by unnoticed, as my son and I both teach skiing at Keystone and this was our busiest weekend of the year. I got up at 6:30, ate, made my lunch, and we drove to work. I had clients from out of town for two days of private lessons – from 8:30 until 4:00.

wow, Mandy that made me cry. How sweet and well-deserved. I’m glad you had that talk with him, it’s so important for our kids to be taught to think about and appreciate others.

Wow, that is terribly sweet… It amazes me how thoughtful other people can be in using their time and energy to do something good and sweet for us. To recognize that effort is also a wonderful thing, and to feel that gratitude.

Valentine’s passed me by as well — I was at a science conference in Chicago. As a nice note, though, they devoted one session to the “science of kissing” (which is really interesting).
